        At Pathways Bioscience we believe that supporting the body’s own cell protection mechanisms is a crucial way to avoid or overcome health problems. We are focused on the development and commercialization of new dietary supplement and pharmaceutical products that target the Nrf2 cell signaling pathway and influence cytoprotective mechanisms using Nrf2.0® technology.

        Our experienced team at Pathways Bioscience is led by Dr. Joe M. McCord (PhD in Biochemistry), who co-discovered the superoxide dismutase enzyme that launched the whole field of redox biology; Dr. Brooks M. Hybertson (MBA, PhD in Analytical Chemistry) who has over 25 years of experience leading R&D pertaining to oxidative stress, the Nrf2 transcription factor, and the development of new pharmaceutical and dietary supplement agents; Dr. Alan Gao (MBA, PhD in Molecular Biology), who is an expert in genomics and the measurement and interpretation of gene expression; Mr. Swapan Bose, a skilled research scientist who has assisted Dr. McCord on his laboratory projects for over 3 decades, and Mr. Mike Lu, who brings financial and strategic expertise to Pathways Bioscience based on his prior experiences as a mutual fund analyst and manager.

        Dr. Joe McCord

        Founder

        Joe M. McCord received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Duke University in 1970 where he and his mentor, Professor Irwin Fridovich discovered a new family of antioxidant enzymes which they named Superoxide Dismutases. For their work they were awarded the Elliott Cresson Medal by the Franklin Institute in 1997 (other recipients have included Pierre and Marie Curie, Orville Wright, Alexander Graham Bell and Henry Ford).

        Dr. McCord was a founder and first elected President of the Oxygen Society, now called the Society for Redox Biology and Medicine (SFRBM). He has published 200 scientific studies, reviews, and presentations that have now been cited nearly 38,000 times by other scientists. For nearly two decades he has focused on the mechanisms of activation of the Nrf2 transcription factor and the two thousand human genes it regulates.

        Dr. Brooks Hybertson

        President/CEO

        Dr. Hybertson is motivated by a desire to help people help themselves in their pursuit of wellness and healthy aging. As President/CEO of Pathways Bioscience, he feels extremely fortunate to be working with his outstanding teammates studying the science of Nrf2-dependent gene expression and cell protection, and concomitantly developing new products to increase healthspan and improve people’s lives.

        Brooks earned his BA (Chemistry) from St. Olaf College in 1985 and PhD (Analytical Chemistry) from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1992. He received postdoctoral training at the Webb-Waring Institute for Biomedical Research in Denver prior to joining the University of Colorado School of Medicine faculty. He earned his MBA from the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado, Boulder in 2004. He is an author on more than 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and is an inventor on a dozen issued patents.

        Dr. Alan Gao

        Chief Operating Officer

        Dr. Gao co-founded Pathways Bioscience and serves as the company’s Chief Operations Officer, overseeing research, scientific collaborations, product development, and product manufacturing. He is best known for his role as the director of genomics core facility at University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and his expertise in genomics and the measurement and interpretation of gene expression. His lab, the largest academic genomic core in Colorado, is pivotal in providing foundational data for numerous projects at the University.

        Dr. Gao’s academic journey includes postdoctoral training in Dr. Joe McCord’s lab, where he focused on genetic engineering of superoxide dismutase enzymes and their roles in oxidative stress and aging. Presently, his research delves into the molecular mechanisms of aging, inflammation, and COVID, employing genome-wide strategies. He is also actively involved in developing new dietary supplements and pharmaceutical products targeting the Nrf2 cell signaling pathway, leveraging Nrf2.0® Technology.

        Swapan Bose, B Pharm

        Lab Manager

        Swapan K. Bose received his BPharm degree (with Honors) from the University of Dacca, Bangladesh in 1976, and his B.S. degree in Biology from the University of South Alabama in 1981. He has worked with Dr. McCord for the past 44 years, providing technical assistance and expertise for more than 50 students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting professors during that time. He has co-authored 22 peer-reviewed studies in the areas of free radical biology and Nrf2 activation. Swapan was the first addition to the Pathways Bioscience team in 2014.
